Where I am going

Everything is always subject to change… But the big moves are usually planned in advance, to save some money over long-haul flights.

good plan :) generally speaking – when you go month to month; place to place – what/where are you planning to stay at?

As a future traveler/backpacker (im currently planning my 8 country – 1 year – trip (for my 30th) – in a few years. So will pretty much do it all in a circle, in a sense – travel up and around and connect places to save cost and so forth.

What is your suggestion and advice on doing something to this level – such a plan and adventure per say – like – what if one place is very cold; while the other is warm or hot like a beach – say from Russia to Thailand 3 months apart.

I don’t plan on taking too much with me; except a lappy and bare essentials and the basics. The more places I go – the more stuff or type of weather I will come across – so how do you keep yourself light the further along you go? and for weather changes – how do you handle it?

Anyways, glad I found your site (I saw a posting from my friend Emily and came across your profile), but I do like how you travel/see the world. I am also a writer/food lover, so I will be blogging/writing about my adventures as well.

Have fun and I look forward in reading more.

      Hey Clint,

I don’t usually make this much plans, I like to leave some space for impro. I like to be able to change plans, follow somebody, or get last minute to a place that has a special event I wasn’t aware of.
This time is special because I have just a few months left in Asia, and an AirAsia sale happened at the same moment ;)
If plans: I often use CouchSurfing, a few weeks (or a week) before, visit a friend, or friend of a friend (if applicable) – or stay in a guesthouse. If I go without plans, I make sure I have enough crash money to be able to get an hotel, or what, just in case. But usually I find good things. Some people even will offer hospitality on your way, and if you have all your bookings you will feel ‘oh crap’: nicer to stay with a local :)
When I arrive in a new city without plan I go sit in a café, open Web browser, and find accommodation on the spot. Or, ask the locals.

Ah, the cold/hot weather issue… I decided I would spend those two years in the hot weather. I’ll go in the cold end of 2012 – kind of splitting the world in two ;) I like to carry nice city clothes/shoes, so having summer+winter apparel is a bit frustrating to me. But I am pretty sure if you can deal with the minimum, you can do it. You can always send back stuff to your family/friends, or ask them to send you stuff, also.

I tend to favor clothes that can fit the most occasions also. It’s actually autumn in Taipei and quite chilly, so having a leather jacket, jeans and a few long sleeves shirts saves me. I’ll buy a few one more, and when I’ll leave for warm weather again, I’ll let the ones I like the less here, simply.

Not sure if it helps :) Please do send me your blog link once you start writing about your aventure!

South America is the plan after US/Canada (or in the place of depending on the finances) :) But it’s 2013/2014, a bit far no? Where in SA do you want to work?

    Hi Corinne,

I’m a web designer going nomadic later this year – I’m wondering how you manage your workload on the road? I’m considering how long I should stay in places, at the moment I’m thinking of settling in a place for 3 months, then spending two or three weeks on shorter trips (staying a few days to a week per place), then settling in another place for 3 months… and so on.

This seems quite similar to what you’ve done so far, but when you’re in a place for a few days do you still get work done? Or do you just suspend client projects until you’re settled in a place?

    Great site btw :-)

      Hey Tom,
      That’s a good question :)
Yes that’s basically what I was planning to do, but I ended up staying in places way longer (1 year, 6 months). 3 months is actually quite short to get used to a place and feel more or less comfy in AND getting a good grasp of what the culture is like.
When I’m in a place for a short time, I usually suspend work. Unless there’s a deadline I absolutely have to deal with, then I’ll try to combine work/discovery as much as I can – but it can be exhausting.
If I think I can visit a city in 3 days for example, I will usually triple that amount of time for my stay, so I’m sure I can do what I want, do a bit of work, and let some time for unexpected.
If you’re planning on moving much around, you’re probably going to be full of energy at the start! But sooner or later you’ll get tired. I’ll suggest to slow down as much as you can to avoid exhaustion and keep the inspiration in :)
Much luck with your adventures, and hope to read about it!
